About Savannah River Site Heritage Preserve

The Savannah River Site Heritage Preserve encompasses approximately 300,000 acres of protected lands within the Savannah River Site (SRS), a federally managed nuclear reservation located in western South Carolina near the Georgia border. This preserve includes diverse habitats such as hardwood and pine forests, wetlands, sandhills, and riparian zones along the Savannah River, fostering habitat for an array of plant and animal species, including several rare and endangered species. Formerly used for nuclear production, the site’s restricted access has inadvertently preserved large tracts of relatively undisturbed landscapes, making it an ecological treasure in the region. Among its significant natural features are populations of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, gopher tortoise, and diverse bird species that attract birdwatchers. Additionally, archaeological sites on the property reveal Native American and early colonial-era artifacts and settlements, further emphasizing its cultural importance. Recreational access is limited and controlled by the Department of Energy and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to ensure safety and conservation. However, managed public access includes hiking trails, wildlife observation points, and fishing opportunities in certain designated areas, drawing outdoor enthusiasts interested in exploring a largely undeveloped landscape. Visitors appreciate the solitude, scenic river views, and the chance to experience ecosystems seldom found in more heavily developed regions. The preserve is also utilized for scientific research, environmental monitoring, and educational programs focused on conservation and restoration of native habitats.
